Take Action
There are ways to protect yourself and prevent Sexually Transmitted Diseases:
- When having sex, use a latex condom. If you use a lubricant it should be water-based.
- Know the symptoms of STD's. Look for them in your partner as well.
- Limit your number of sexual partners.
- Practice monogamy, or having sex with only one person ("Sexually Transmitted Diseases" NP).
- Ask your partner if they've had or have an STD. Do not have unprotected sex if your partner is showing signs or has symptoms.
- Education and counselling are good ways to learn about the different diseases.
- Get regular check-ups ("STD Prevention Today" NP).
- Stay away from vaginal and anal intercourse until you and your partner have both been tested for an infection.
- Certain vaccines are available that help prevent STD's before any sexual act.
- According to the Mayo Clinic Staff, it is possible to be infected with an STD yet still test negative.
- Abstinence is 100% effective in preventing STD's (Mayo Clinic NP)
